Meanwhile, Roxanne and Jolene had taken a detour on the way to the Rock Creek airfield. They'd had a late start thanks to Jolene's meeting with Ellis, so Jolene decided to make up time by taking a shortcut through the mountains on an old logging road. But it was largely impassable on the western side of the pass because of the early snows. They found themselves going off road in search of a way down to the airfield.
